With Veteran’s Day, the Marine Corps 236th Birthday, and the Holiday Season approaching, it is difficult not to remember our men and women serving overseas. Because they risk their lives daily to protect our freedom, it only seems fit to show them our appreciation.
Storm Williams of Lewisville, North Carolina made sure to show his appreciation when he started his Books for Soldiers program. As an ex-serviceman, Storm knew about the monotony and isolation that comes with being at war, so when troops were sent to Afghanistan and Iraq, he rounded up his resources and sent the first batch of books to his buddies. He found himself receiving letters from soldiers he didn’t know, thanking him for the books. This pushed him to launch Books for Soldiers (booksforsoldiers.com), which now matches up book requests to volunteers around the country. This program has been an overwhelming success, and reminds the soldiers that there is someone states-side thinking of them.
So this Veteran’s Day, and the rest of the year, remember our men and women overseas. Whether you decide to donate old books, magazines, DVD’s, or simply your time, they appreciate us as much as we appreciate them.
