Severe weather, including thunderstorms and tornadoes, can happen even while you’re at work. What can you do to stay safe in the workplace? Here are some tips to stay safe at work (or at home) in severe weather.
* Make sure your office is well-stocked with first aid kits, flashlights, a battery-powered radio, extra batteries, and plenty of water in case you end up stranded there during a power outage and/or storm.
* Move away from windows. In severe winds, glass can shatter and wedge itself into your body when projectiled at high speeds!
* Move to an area that does not have windows, generally an interior area of your home or office. Hallways work best in an office setting. Make sure any surrounding doors are closed if at all possible.
* If you are in a car on your way to work or on your way home, do not try to outrun a tornado. Leave your car and lie flat in a nearby ditch or depression (not a storm ditch/drain).
* If you are outside while it is lightning, do not seek shelter in a shed or other flimsy building, or under a tree. Seek shelter in a building with a hard top.
* Do not take a bath or shower during severe weather.
* Make sure everyone in your office knows the protocol for severe weather–where are the safe zones?
We hope you will do your part to make sure everyone stays safe during inclement weather at work!
