Being “Green” isn’t about waking up one morning and deciding you are not going to throw anything away, use anything with chemicals, or drive your car anything less than 2 miles– it’s about being conscious of consumption…and conscious of waste. Taking note of the little things you do in the office, for example, can really open your eyes to everyday habits that may not be very green. Ask yourself: what do you drink your coffee out of every day? If you eat at the office, do you use paper plates? When you dry your hands in the office restroom, what do you use?
For one day, try this: write down everything you use that is disposable. Plastic bags at the grocery store, paper towels to dry your hands, paper plates and utensils you eat off of, coffee cups, all of it! After that, pick one thing to eliminate from your list each week. Donate some real towels to your office and organize a team of green volunteers to wash the dirty ones each week. Take some reusable shopping bags with you to the grocery store. Bring a set of your less expensive dishes and silverware to work to use instead of paper and plastic, or buy one of those cool new reusable coffee mugs that look like takeout coffee cups. You will be amazed at the waste you reduce each day, each week, each YEAR by forming these simple habits.
