Halloween is one of the most fun times here at Orange Legal. With orange being our primary color, we really like to boast our spirit this time of year, so we wanted to share some cool, fun facts associated with Halloween!
1. Halloween is one of the oldest holidays, with origins dating back to the ancient Romans and the festival of the dead, Parentalia.
2. Although jack-o’-lanterns are one of the most recognized symbols of Halloween, they are not the oldest. The idea of hollowing out a pumpkin reflects the tradition of hollowing turnips to remember the souls held in purgatory.
3. The idea of wearing costumes and masks on Halloween goes back to the idea that spirits of the dead visit the living on October 31st. The masks and costumes are meant to keep the spirits from recognizing the living.
4. In 1964, Helen Pfeil of Greenlawn, NY was arrested for handing out arsenic-laced treats as a prank on teens she deemed too old for trick-or-treating.
5. Black cats got a bad rap on Halloween because they were believed to be witch’s subordinates who protected their master’s dark powers.
6. In England, white cats, rather than black cats, are believed to be bad luck.
7. If you see a spider on Halloween, it is said to be the spirit of a loved one watching over you.
8. Bobbing for apples started with a Roman harvest festival honoring Pamona, the goddess of fruit trees.
9. About 99% of all pumpkins sold are used as jack o’ lanterns for Halloween.
10. Halloween is the third biggest party day of the year behind New Year’s Eve and Super Bowl Sunday.
Have a safe and festive Halloween!
